Celt Islam, aka Muhammad Abdullah Hamzah, aka ‘The Analogue Fakir’ uses a fusion of influences; Dub, Electro, Drum&Bass and mixes this with Islamic/world grooves to create a Dub driven dance crossover.
Celt Islam is an English Muslim, a Sufi, and a member of the Northern alternative dub/breaks outfit ‘Nine Invisibles’ as well as working under the name ‘Analogue Fakir’. Born Julian Micheal Moore in West Yorkshire, UK, he converted to Islam in 1989 and studied Islam and Classical Sufism in Granada, Spain under the instruction of Shaykh Abdal Qadir. He is the cultural director of The Association of British Muslims and a peace activist.
Celt Islam has released 2 albums; ‘Dervish’ in 2009 and ‘AL Mizan’ (The Balance) in 2010. This is a mixture of heavy basslines, dubstep, dancehall and D&B, all wrapped up in a warm blanket of world music sounds. The album features Bongo Chilli, Inder Goldfinger, Danman (Iration steppers), Dawoud Kringle and Masala. 2012 will see two album releases ‘Urban Sutra’ on Urban Sedated Records and ‘Baghdad’ on Ajnavision Records.
He plays as a DJ and with an MC, but also extends this into a ‘live’ show with; Tabla, Percussion, Sitar, Keyboards and a selection of top UK MC’s and Guest Vocalists.
